The Allen-Bradley 1791-IOBW is a compact, self-contained "Block I/O" module designed for the Remote I/O (RIO) platform. Unlike standard rack-based modules, the Block I/O series combines a power supply, a Remote I/O adapter, and discrete I/O points into a single, ruggedized unit. This "all-in-one" design is engineered to reduce wiring costs and installation time by allowing I/O to be mounted directly on a machine or at a remote location without the need for a separate chassis.

This module features 16 discrete input channels and 16 discrete output channels, all rated for a nominal 24VDC. The inputs are sinking-type, operating within a 10–30VDC range, while the outputs provide sourcing current for various field devices like solenoids, small motors, and indicators. This high-density 32-point configuration makes the 1791-IOBW an efficient solution for distributed control systems requiring a balanced mix of digital inputs and outputs.

The 1791-IOBW interfaces with a host processor via the standard Allen-Bradley "Blue Hose" Remote I/O network. It supports selectable communication rates of 57.6k, 115.2k, and 230.4k baud, which are configured via internal DIP switches. For physical termination, the block includes accessible screw terminals with integrated labeling space, ensuring secure connections for both network and field-side wiring in demanding industrial environments.

Built for heavy industrial duty, the module features a robust metal housing that provides excellent protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and mechanical stress. It operates reliably within a temperature range of 0–60°C (32–140°F) and includes front-panel diagnostic LEDs that monitor the network status and the state of each individual I/O point. The 1791-IOBW is UL listed and CSA certified, meeting rigorous international standards for safety and industrial performance.
